On this page, I have collected worksheets I have created for in-class use to guide instruction on topics relevant to first-year writing. Many of these worksheets have been inspired by and adapted from various other instructors and writing centers. Each worksheet cites these sources. They are for public use and to be revised for any pedagogical purpose.
This worksheet is adapted from Northwest Vista College’s “Thesis Statement Review and Worksheet” and Ontario Tech University’s “Thesis Statement Worksheet.” It is designed to help students identify components of a thesis and critically assess stronger vs. weaker theses.
This worksheet is adapted from Suzan Last and Candice Neveu’s “1.3 Understanding the Rhetorical Situation.” The worksheet guides students through different rhetorical situations in order to equip them with the ability to identify appropriate rhetorical audiences and purposes for the particular situation.
The examples in this worksheet are adapted from Purdue OWL’s “Paraphrase: Write It in Your Own Words.” The worksheet prompts students to differentiate the differences between quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing and to practice MLA and APA academic citation styles based on their integration of outside sources.
This worksheet guides students through identifying components of a paragraph (that I wrote) like topic sentences, evidence, analysis, and concluding statements. Then it asks students to build a paragraph of their own for a particular purpose and audience with provided, and made up for the purpose of the worksheet, evidence.
This worksheet asks students to begin a rhetorical analysis of an advertisement.
