Hey there! My name is Ash Mayes and this is my portfolio. Throughout my personal and professional work, I grapple with how literacy and one’s understanding of their positionality, and thus their responsibility to others, deeply influence quality of life for the individual and for the communities they are connected to. Thus, this portfolio’s central focus is exploring writing as a tool for growth and critical reflection for increased community engagement and self-actualization.
This portfolio was originally created for Penn State University’s Teaching with Technology Certificate. Multimodal pedagogy with a strong emphasis on the use of digital technology in the classroom largely features in the content of the site, and this lens is a key starting point for the development of future work.
In addition to my pedagogical materials and contemplations, my writing on additional themes like rhetorical theory, science fiction, social justice, food, labor, and graduate school as an institution and an experience also feature on the site. As someone whose studies and interests are largely interdisciplinary, having these themes exist together in chorus with one another is a core value guiding my work.
